อย่างแรกเรามาดูประวัติความเป็นมากันก่อน บริษัท สหมงคลประกันภัย จำกัด (มหาชน) นั้นได้เริ่มก่อตั้งโดยกลุ่มธุรกิจค้าข้าวสารและพืชผลทางการเกษตรดำเนินธุรกิจส่งออกสินค้าการเกษตร เพื่อไปจำหน่ายยังต่างประเทศรวม ทั้งให้เช่าคลังสินค้าเพื่อเป็นที่พักสินค้าขณะรอ การส่งออก และหลังจากนั้นได้ขยายธุรกิจทางด้านการรับประกันอัคคีภัย จึงได้ก่อตั้งบริษัทขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการภายใต้ชื่อ “บริษัท สหมงคลประกันภัย และคลังสินค้า จำกัด” เมื่อวันที่ 29 สิงหาคม 2494 ด้วยทุนจดทะเบียน 10 ล้านบาท

ต่อมาในปี 2510 บริษัทได้หันมาเน้นการดำเนินธุรกิจด้านรับประกันวินาศภัยเพียงอย่างเดียว โดยทำการเปลี่ยนชื่อใหม่เป็น บริษัท สหมงคลประกันภัย จำกัด ( THE UNION PROSPERS INSURANCECO,.LTD. ) ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า “โชคดีมีชัยด้วยความร่ำรวยและประสบความสำเร็จร่วมกันอย่างสมบูรณ์” และเมื่อวันที่ 19 กันยายน 2555 บริษัทได้จดทะเบียนแปรสภาพเป็นบริษัทมหาชน  โดยใช้ชื่อ “บริษัท สหมงคลประกันภัย จำกัด (มหาชน)”
